What’s My Motivation?

When I published my posts yesterday I expected things to go pretty much as they had gone as usual. I’d publish my posts, do whatever it was I was supposed to be doing (or wanted to do, in case the ‘supposed to’ was already done) and I’d go to bed with a couple of likes and maybe another follower or comment, happy. I would wake up the next morning with a couple more of those and I’d feel great. People would have come to my blog and appreciated what I’d written. That’s how things had gone for the past weeks, especially the last one, after all. Somewhat over an hour later, though, nothing. I was puzzled and decided to wait a bit longer, constantly looking at the mailbox from the corner of my eye. Eagerly I’d click on it when I saw a new message appear, only to find out it had nothing to do with what I was waiting for. Eventually I just went to sleep, disappointed and somewhat perturbed. There’ll be something tomorrow, I told myself.

When I woke up that morning after an uneasy night of sleep, I performed my usual morning routine and eagerly checked my mail again. Nothing. I sat down with my breakfast, grumpy, moping. Why did no one respond to my posts? The reflection/intermission post, fine. I had kind of expected that. But not even the slightest bit of attention for the little story?! People liked the other things wrote. I’d seen it before! Why did no one even seem to notice this?! Was it too long? Too short? Was it, bad? What?!

And around that time I realized something. These thoughts, they were exactly the kinds I had always told myself to avoid. They, clichéd as it may sound, just weren’t me.

I may have mentioned it once or twice in passing, but I love creating things, from the greatest of galaxies to the tiniest of beings, and bringing them to life. And for me the best tool to bring those creations to life is writing. So I write. I also love my creations and if someone will get at least a bit of the enjoyment out of them that I got, then that feels amazing. So I share. And that, as they say, is that…

Likes? Followers? Comments? I love them! It is absolutely wonderful to see people find appreciation for what I create and to get in touch with them! It really helps inspiring me and I hope it will continue for a long time to come! But if I write merely for the sake of getting those, then I have lost sight of the reason why I enjoy writing, and just a week after I had advised others to not do just that. Silly me…

I didn’t start this blog expecting many people would find it and like it. So when people finally came and liked it, in greater numbers than anticipated, it somewhat overwhelmed me. My expectations turned unrealistic, even hubristic (I didn’t even know that was a word before now!), and eventually led me to where I started today. In hindsight, I was being unbelievably ridiculous with my state of mind and behaviour following my posting of Daminia. All in all, though, I don’t think there was any real threat of me, to paraphrase Survivor, changing my passion for glory. At the very least there isn’t now. The stupid mind-set’s gone away now. My head is on straight again and my feet are back on the ground. The experience and realization, though short, weren’t the most enjoyable ones, but they definitely proved cathartic. In the end I’m left all the more vigilant for it and I’m ready to roll out once again, more motivated than ever! Won’t you ride along? ^_^

About

Ever since a group of shoes held a birthday party a long, long time ago (though in a galaxy not that far away) a little boy’s appreciation for creation was born. And so, throughout the following years shoes partied, a dinosaur travelled through time, oddly shaped football players went on adventures, a young wanderer became a knight, a comedian rose to godhood, Jedi fought an evil empire, a war between cyborg warlords and human-insect hybrids engulfed the world… The boy had learned how with only words on paper (and from times to time a few pictures) he was able to bring people, places, even entire worlds to life. By now that little boy has reached almost the third decade of his life and his love for telling stories has not ceased. And finally, long after he had planned to, he has decided to share these stories with the world. Whether you are a new or already familiar face: welcome to this little archive of mine! This is a place where I will, finally, actually be sharing my writing with others. It will feature pretty much anything I feel like sharing, both old and new stories, fan-fiction and original content, and probably some non-fiction added in at times. So, if you like reading, writing, stories (or me ^_~), drop by, drop a comment (I can’t promise I’ll get back to you quickly, since I’m horrible at that, but I’ll do my best) and, drop it like it’s hot. … Sorry… ^_^; In any case, I hope you’ll enjoy yourself and I look forward to seeing you around!

Who? Just your average descendant of two sea-faring peoples, recently graduated anthropology Master and aspiring author with a life-long passion for writing.

What? Uhm, human. I think... Also a bit crazy, but in a good way. I think...

Where? A land under the sea, far, far away. Occasionally with my head in the clouds.

Why? Trying to get both my work and my love for writing out there, sharing them with others and getting in touch with fellow writers, artists and other like-minded people.

Hi! ^_^
