Reading through the world building guide I mentioned last time has really shown me how much things there to be taken into account when building up an entire world. Some of these things I have certainly had in the back of my mind, had some ideas about them, but I hadn’t really actively thought about how exactly to implement them. One of the biggest of these points: the world itself.
Yes, I have a en entire map and a broad geographical overview of the Realm. A lot of the landscape as well as some of the regions’ climates are there. The lands of the Realm contain forests, mountains, deserts, swamps, rivers. The Island of the Cold-Blooded is described as a warm and damp place and is probably (sub-)tropical. Most of the known world is covered by seas and oceans. A lot is already in place, but very little of it has been really fleshed out. What do the lands of Men actually look like? What about most of the islands in the Cat People Archipelago? The Dark Plains? What are these lands really like? I have some idea, but that’s really how far it goes; the ideas in my head.
The main reason for this, I believe, is because the characters were the first things to be created by my friend and I, followed by the other inhabitants. The rest of the world followed afterwards, was thought up as the story went along. We didn’t really stand still to have a good look at it at the time, unless we had to revisit an area after we hadn’t been to for a while. When we got a quest to get into the Dark Rider encampment, we created the Dark Rider encampment. When we had to visit the king of the High Elves, we thought up the High Elf Citadel. And it was the same thing our travel through the Hydra Swamps to the Dock, our face off with the Demon Prince in his arena and every step in our journey all the way to the Fire Mount in the heartland of the Island of Darkness… Bit by little bit the Realm was pieced together until it finally formed into what you can see now.
Even with the map there, there are definitely blank spots to fill in and ideas to expand upon. And that brings me to what will be my first priority and the next phase of this project: to work out the various landscapes and climates of all the lands and seas the Realm contains, to truly give them shape! Even for me, one of the creators of the Realm, this is a largely unexplored territory, so I’ll have to admit, it feels a tiny tad, scary. Definitely exciting, though! Well, let’s see how I’ll fare, shall we? ^_^
