What do the TARDIS and the RP stories at the Earth Jedi Order have in common? Well, the ability to go back some 3,000 years into the past, for one. The story of the second EJO RP session took place during and in the aftermath of a pivotal event of the Knights of the Old Republic video game, several millennia before the events of the movies. It was started by then EJO newcomer Davion, who would later become one of the Masters of the Order, and Nor-Ca Ansto – at that point Nillanthir’s apprentice – and myself quickly joined at the start. Nillanthir and Churro Kradd, another fairly active member, joined later on. The names of the characters were once again the same as our EJO names, which, considering the chronological place of both this story and the previous one, may create some dissonance. I’ve always semi-explained it as certain characters/families/archetypes (say, its Skywalkers, its Republic and its Jedi) always existing in each Star Wars time period and it was the same for these characters. It was mostly something for myself, though, as these stories weren’t necessarily written within a sort of grand EJO canon. But on to the story at hand!
As the Jedi Civil War nears its conclusion, the Sith Lord Darth Malak orders an orbital bombardment on the planet Dantooine, annihilating everything and everyone on the planet, including the Jedi Enclave. The first part of the story focusses on a number of Jedi on Dantooine as the attack begins and their attempt to evacuate and escape the planet. Each of the characters started somewhere on Dantooine, in or near the Jedi Enclave, looking to reunite and seeking to bring as many of the people of Dantooine to safety as possible. All the while everything around them is torn down as Darth Malak’s fleet mercilessly bombards the planet. Vhiran, Davion and Nor-ca eventually get together and with a bit of trouble convince a group of settlers to go the planet’s Kinrath caves to hide from the bombardment. Just as they are to leave however, they are attacked by group of Sith troopers led by a Dark Jedi. Davion escorts the settlers to the caves, but runs into a lot of trouble with the Kinrath in the caves. Fortunately Nillanthir quickly comes to his aid and together they face down the beasts.
Meanwhile Vhiran and Nor-Ca hold off the enemy, doing fairly well against the soldiers. The Dark Jedi, however, gets impatient, kills her own soldiers and decides to take down the Jedi herself. As the Jedi learn of Davion’s troubles, Nor-Ca is sent to help him, leaving Vhiran to face the Dark Jedi. On his own Vhiran is no match for the Dark Jedi. He is defeated but just as before is killed, Master Vandar Tokare comes to his aid. After a short battle the Dark Jedi, Tyria, is defeated by Vandar. It is revealed Tyria was not only Vandar’s former apprentice but also Vhiran’s mother. Saddened and confused by his mothers’ demise Vhiran accompanies Vandar to meet up with the others.
Now fighting off hordes of Kinrath, Nillanthir and Nor-Ca have been split off from Davion. However, the Padawan manages to find a ship in a smugglers hideout in the caves, which he uses to evacuate the others. But even as everyone manages to get on the ship and everything around them crumbles to the force of the bombardment, endless waves of Kinrath throw themselves at the Jedi and will certainly reach the ship if left unchecked. Nillanthir decides to face them on his own, so that the others can escape. As he disappears into the swarm of predators the survivors make contact with the Republic fleet and escape Dantooine for the Muunilinst system.
Wow, this story was way more eventful than I remembered! I would later use parts of The Fall of Dantooine as the opening to a story I would write myself, which focussed more on Vhiran. As I had mostly that story in mind as I started writing this entry, I suppose I forgot a lot of the other things that happened. Silly little me! Probably the reason why this turned out so long again (*sigh* I never learn, do I?). And things don’t even end here! The Fall of Dantooine was the first half of a two-part RP story. Both the sequel, which was highly anticipated by the participants in this one, and the story I wrote will be the focus of next time’s Ghosts of Writing Past. Until then!
