A fairly short one today. Since the mountain ranges I have written about up until this point have very little life besides the main sapient population (which, like the Skinks and the Slan were also inspired by (or taken from ^_^;) the Warhammer fantasy universe), there is very little I can actually tell about it. I do try to give them some interesting or at least distinguishing features, but that has its limits. In any case, I hope you’ll enjoy this entry on the home of the Realm’s Kroxigor.
Sculpting the World
Landscape: A long and rugged grey mountain range, the Kroxigor Mountains extend for over 800 km from the Western coast to the Slan Marshes and slightly over 300 km from the Southern coast to the borders with the Valley of the Wild Lizards and the Pantathiën Lowlands to the North. There are no passages leading in or out of the mountains, making penetrating and traversing the region very difficult to all but the native Kroxigor, large and powerful sapient anthropomorphic crocodile people. The region can roughly be divided into two main areas. The outer range, going along the coast and along the inland borders, is where the higher and bigger mountains are located, going up to 1,500 meters high and forming a kind of natural wall around the region. Within the outer range lie lower mountains and more flat rocky terrain. This “inner range” contains small natural water basins which serve as the homes and breeding grounds of the strongest of the Kroxigor. The other Kroxigor live in the outcroppings and small caves within the mountains.
Climate: The Kroxigor Mountains have a subtropical highland climate and is among the more moderate regions on the island. Because of the higher altitude, its temperatures – fairly constant throughout the year – are significantly lower than in the other regions. Although it is still quite warm during the day, the nights are remarkably cold. While not arid, it is significantly dryer in the mountains than on the rest of the island, which helps to explain the importance the Kroxigor attach to the water basins. Rain falls less than in the more tropical regions, but is not uncommon and usually falls enough to keep the water level of the basins constant.
Flora and Fauna: On the mountains themselves no plant life of any kind can be found. Grasses and plants are restricted to the areas all the way down the mountains, especially where the Valley of the Wild Lizards begins.
Aside from seabirds, having their nests in the mountains along the coastal areas, there is also no animal life in the Kroxigor Mountains, again with the exception of the area along the region borders, where animals from those bordering regions sometimes venture and which are used by the Kroxigor as hunting grounds.
