Chapter 1. Eve of Destruction
Part 2. Knightfall
Behind a pillar in the midst of the hall in the Jedi Temple two figures stood back to back, a young man and woman. The man, clad in a long dark blue robe, had long dark brown hair tied in a tail and a short dark brown ring beard. The woman had straight half long black hair and wore her long Jedi coat over a dark brown leather tunic. The light of their green bladed lightsabers a beacon in the darkness that had engulfed the Temple. From the moment the 501st Legion of Republic clone troopers, headed by a mysterious hooded, lightsaber wielding figure the troopers seemingly referred to as Lord Vader, had marched into Temple they had started to annihilate all Jedi inside. The hall was sown with the corpses of fallen Jedi. The two figures had managed to escape the massacre and now tried to find a way to escape the Temple.
“Vhiran,” the woman whispered. Vhiran moved his steel blue eyes to her. “To the corner over there on my sign,” she continued as she inclined her eyes to a corner of the hall, beneath the balcony. It was covered by a pillar and completely out of range for the clone troopers. “Ready?”
Vhiran looked back in front of him. “Ready when you are, Bultar,” he said, barely audible.
“Now!” Bultar called out. Nearly simultaneously the two started running towards the corner, still back to back deflecting the laser fire as the clones stationed at the balcony opened fire at them. For a moment they stopped and hid behind a pillar as a barrage of laser came down in front of them. Bultar quickly took of her coat and threw it in the opposite direction of which they were heading. She gave Vhiran a small push and the two ran further as the clone troopers first opened fire on the thrown coat, but then shot at the running Jedi again. No matter how small and simple the diversion was, it had bought them enough time to reach the corner in one piece.
Vhiran panted. “We should be safe here for now,” he said.
Bultar nodded. “But it won’t be long before they get here. And if this Vader figure appears I doubt we’ll ever get out of here.”
Vhiran looked around. “The exit isn’t far now,” He said with a hopeful smile, but just as quickly as the smile had appeared, it was replaced by a grim expression. “But they’ll no doubt have troops there as well.” He sighed sadly.
Bultar smiled. “We’ll have to try.”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
“On my sign, run as fast as you can to the exit. Be ready to face a huge number of troopers and…” She paused a bit and sighed. “Be ready to kill.”
Vhiran closed his eyes and nodded. He and Bultar had never in their life killed an opponent and now not only were they most likely forced to kill, but they were to kill those they had fought alongside with. “We’ll make it as quick and painless as possible,” he whispered.
Bultar smiled and nodded. “Yes, let’s do that,” she whispered back.
Vhiran sighed. The exit was so close, yet their chances of survival were slim at most. “Ehm, Bultar?” he suddenly spoke, hesitating. “I, ehm, I had something, to, to tell you,” he continued softly. “In case, in case we won’t get out of here.”
Questioningly Bultar looked back. “Yes?”
A bit shaking, Vhiran closed his eyes for a moment. “I, ehm, I…”
Before he could finish explosives violently tore through the wall behind them and flung the two Jedi meters into the hall. Bultar managed to get up on her knees, her back felt like it was burning. She saw Vhiran moving, trying to get up as well. Only seconds had past since the explosion when the troopers opened fire again. Bultar didn’t hesitate and immediately rolled over to Vhiran. Covering his body with hers, she took the blaster shots that would have otherwise struck the other Jedi. Vhiran looked up and saw his rescuer smiling at him.
“Lie very still and get out of here when they’re gone,” Bultar whispered. “Please make it out of here alive.”
Shocked with what happened in the past seconds Vhiran looked once more at Bultar’s blood covered face, then put his head down and closed his eyes. At the moment Vhiran Ashukahwa sunk into a hibernation trance to escape from the rampaging clone troopers, Bultar Swan felt her life leaving her mangled body and slowly slipped into darkness.
